There are several books on my reading list for this summer as I prepare for next school year, consider the implications of starting the year on a virtual platform, and in light of current events around the world. I think it is important to be well read and to share great books with my students.
I recently finished a two book series by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. The War that Saved My Life and The War I finally Won, while focused on World War II elements, helped students to connect to current events such as immigration, bias, food shortages, and personal struggles. This historical fiction, while based on true events, is fictitional enough to catch a young readers interest. The authors website is a great place to visit to see her other books based on historical fiction.
Another book on my list is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. This is another book with great connections to current events, bias, education, and poverty. This book encourages students to look at careers that include a STEM background and encourages problem solving using the resources available at hand. This book is available in both novel and picture book and appeals to students across multiple grade levels. The picture book is particulary appealing because the illustrations include recyclable materials to help students visualize what can be done with cast off resources. The author keeps a blog related to the windmills and is a TED talk speaker.

Why MAED:
I chose the Master of Education Reading Program at East Carolina University for a variety of reasons. I have a love of reading and I want my students to share that love. I have added more tools to my repertoire so that I can help all students love reading and understand how important it is to their education including both struggling and reluctant readers. One of my children was a struggling reader and as a parent, I know first-hand how frustrating it can be when your child is a struggling reader; I want to help the parents of my students through this struggle. Reading is the foundation for everything that students will do in education, if they struggle to read, they will struggle in other subjects as well. My goal is to ensure all students become accomplished readers to ensure their educational success.
